Christian Audigier has translated the tattoo designs of Don Ed Hardy, the famous California artist into a line of clothing for men and women who want to wear a tattoo without going under the needle. Featuring designs of mermaids, peacocks, snakes and butterflies, this line of Ed Hardy shirts brings the fantasy themes of body art to life. Don Ed Hardy is well-known around the world for his incredible technique and outstanding creativity.
After receiving a B.F.A. degree in printmaking in 1967 from the San Francisco Art Institute, Don Ed Hardy began his career as a tattoo artist. In 1970 he moved to Japan and returned in the 80s to learn the art from a traditional tattoo master.
Don Ed Hardy's ability to experiment through 40 years of tattooing experience has earned him the moniker of "the Godfather of the Modern Tattoo." In his use of art histories from the cultures such as; Cholo, American and Japanese he has shown a rare talent and creativity for combing these icons with designs associated with hotrod, surfing and tattoo cultures. The result of his perspective is a uniquely blended expression that has made him famous in the tattoo community.
In 2002 Ku USA, Inc. signed a licensing agreement with Don Ed Hardy. Within two years of using his designs to produce a line of apparel other fashion companies started taking interest in his art as well.
In 2004, Christian Audigier took interest in Don Ed Hardy's use of fantasy images in tattoo body art themes such as "Love Kills Slowly" and "Death Before Dishonor." As a result Audigier and Hardy reached an agreement that gave Audigier exclusive rights to use his designs as the "Ed Hardy" brand. The clothing focuses on lifestyle couture and street culture.
